Prof. Diaa Khalil

Chief Innovation Officer

Prof. Diaa Khalil has over 40 years of experience in innovation in micro photonic systems, including integrated optoelectronics and optical MEMS technology. He obtained his PhD from INPG France in 1993 and since 2004 he is a full Professor of photonics in the Faculty of Eng., Ain Shams University where he was also the Chairman of the ECE Dept., the Vice dean of Research and the Acting Dean of the school of Engineering. He is inventor of about 25 granted patents in the US patent office and similar numbers in the Europe, China and Japan patent offices in addition to more than 20 patent applications. He is author and co-author of more than 400 publications, in international journals and conferences, 5 book chapters and 1 ebook published by SPIE. He is also a member in the editorial board of the journal, “Light: Science and Applications - Nature Publishing Group NPG and an associated Editor in IEEE-PTL. He supervised more than 80 MSc and PhD thesis in: Optics, Optoelectronics, Spectroscopy, Optical MEMS and integrated Optics. He was the CTO of the Optical MEMS Division in Si-Ware Systems from 2007 to 2020, leading the development of a unique FTIR MEMS spectrometer that gained the Prism award in the Photonics West Conf. 2014 in SF USA. He also worked with MEMScAP company as the head of the optical MEMS design group where he led the design and characterization of a 2×2 switch and introduced a novel VOA (Variable Optical Attenuator) achieving the world record of minimum PDL reported for wide dynamic range. He was also a Chief Scientific Officer in Infinilink that is recently got acquired by Global Foundries Company where he served as a DMTS (Fellow) for R and D. He is also an investor in many start up Deep Tech companies in Egypt. Prof. Diaa Khalil is a holder of Egypt State Appreciation Prize in engineering science in 2021 and ASU Appreciation prize in 2022. He was the CEO of the Innovator Support Fund ISF reporting to the ministry of Higher education and a member in many scientific committees and a Board member in many scientific institutions Egypt and outside.
